Deep in Alberta’s Eastern Slopes, the Willmore Wilderness Foundation crews are waging a quiet war … against garbage. They clear backcountry campsites for the public to enjoy, packing out load after load of waste by packhorse. From gas cans and propane bottles to liquor bottles, metal stoves, tarps, and tangled frames, the haul was staggering. Along the Smoky River, piles of metal trash were gathered for removal, while trail crews cut back encroaching brush and cleared downed timber. It’s hard work, but it’s preserving the wild beauty of Willmore for generations to come.
